You are not alone. I replaced the clutch in my '53 cultivating Cub a couple years ago, and it failed the same way just yesterday... under bad circumstances. I had just pulled it into the shop to do some adjustments to the cultivator. Since the battery cranked it a little sluggishly I had it running about 3/4 throttle. When I stopped about 5 or 6 feet from another Cub, I noticed the clutch felt a little strange. Suddenly, with the Cub in 2nd gear it lurched forward... even though the pedal was fully depressed!!!! (Impossible, but it was going at least 25 MPH!)

I yanked it out of gear and narrowly avoided a nose to nose collision with the other Cub.

After I got the cultivators off, I checked through the hand hole... the throwout bearing is nowhere near the fingers, and the fingers look like they're fully depressed. The post mortem will happen later, but it looks like maybe a lining failure... and pieces of lining may be overlapped.
