I would suggest taking a compression test first. If the compression is close on all four cylinders, try a different spark plug wire on the #2 cylinder. If it still misses try a different distributor cap. If the #2 cylinder compression is over 20% lower than the other three you have a compression leak which probably will be related to the exhaust valve. (If you are hearing “popping” in the air cleaner, that indicates it is an intake valve.) Check the valve lash on the #2 cylinder. If that is correct you may have a valve that is starting to "burn" and may only be able to notice it under a hard load. Hope this helps...
