The coil in the mag probably failed, or a PO just wanted battery ignition. You disconnect and/or remove the original coil inside the mag, and connect an external automotive type to the points inside the mag, usually also installing a condensor to match the original application of the replacement coil. Since the original mag setup needed no external power supply, and the "kill" switch was used to short the primary side of the mag coil to ground to shut down the engine, the switch must be changed from a 1-wire ground-to-frame-when-off to a 2 terminal switch that is used to switch battery power to the new coil setup "ON" for run, "OFF" for stop, and a wire must be run from a source of battery voltage to the switch, and then the old mag "KILL" wire can be connected to the other terminal on the new switch, and the other end connected to the new coil.
