Super A transmission disassembly

I am trying to replace the 1st & 2nd combined gears on a 1953 Super A and I can't figure out how to remove the spline shaft. The IT shop manual is singularly unhelpful. I have the PTO, and the spline shaft bearing retainer, and the shifter cover off. I can't see how to move the shaft either forward or backward because the reverse gear is rivetted to the shaft and will contact either the case going backwards or the second gear going forward.
Do I need to punch out the reverse gear rivet to be able to slide out the shaft?
Does it come out forward or backward?
Do I need to push out one or both bearings to get it out? Help!
