While you have the steering box open you'll see a big castle nut. That stops the shaft when the steering wheel is turned in one direction. Then there's a big plug on the front of the steering box that stops the shaft in the other direction. Get someone to turn the steering wheel back and forth while you watch what happens there. You can adjust both the nut and the plug to remove most of the slop. It's hard to describe, but once you look at it move you'll see how to adjust it.
