Yes you can get the needle and float separate, but before you do that, take off the bowl and make sure you don't have some dirt in there, and make sure that journal pin holding the float in hasn't slipped out to one side, I have seen that happen on two different occasions on two different tractors... That'll make the gas run thru in a hurry.
