Did I smoke my generator?

I was trying to get my grandfathers 53 cub to start charging today and I tried to polarize the generator by touching a piece of wire to the BAT and the GEN posts on the regulator. Instead of looking I assumed they were the same posts as on my 50 C and I unknowingly connected the "L" terminal to the "GEN" terminal. The tractor was charging before but I have been using it for a couple of days and last night the battery was completely drained when I tried to start it this morning. I think the regulator is not grounded or is faulty because he has had trouble like this before. This was the first time it has been used since he passed away over a year ago. Battery was dead when I first went to use it. Today I tried to test the gen by connecting the jumper from the "F" terminal to the ground when the tractor was running and there was no charge indicated on the gauge. I know the gauge is working because it has for the last two days before the battery was drained. I then jumped from the "BATT" to the "GEN" and there was no sign of charging on the guage. So did I "let the smoke out" of the generator. If so what do I need to fix it? Did I burn the wires to the brushes off or something like that? I can probably do the repair work myself. Does someone sell a gen. rebuild kit or can I get these parts from the local alt. shop?

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
