Well, you're sorta right and sorta wrong about the ancestry of that engine. While IHC used the engine in the Scouts--the ONLY series of sixes used in the Scouts--and the pickups, it originally debuted in 1964 as the 199 CID AMC "Typhoon" six. It grew to 232, and then 258 cubic inches...and, in the Jeep trucks, gained fuel injection and shrank to 4.0 liters (244 CID). But they were tough as nails, and as the government emission requirements became stricter in the late '60's and early '70's, IHC realized they could BUY the engine from AMC a lot cheaper than they could make their own line of sixes emission-compliant. As an IH truck fan AND a former AMC/Jeep parts person, I used to chuckle when I'd see Gremlins and Pacers with engine parts with "IHC" casting marks on manifolds and such (part of the deal...IH did some of the foundry work...that way, less cash changed hands). The primary difference between the IH version and the AMC version was that IHC used Holley carbs, while AMC stuck with Carters.
