Sounds like you broke an axle, not uncommon with these tractors. Try holding first one brake and then the other, and see if it moves or tries to move while the brake is on. There are other problems that will give similar symptoms but a broken axle is the most likely.

You can look into the back of the transmission housing by taking the PTO housing off, but you will have to take the top cover off the transmission to fix it.
