When charging a battery, ALWAYS connect the positive terminal of the charger to the positive terminal of the battery...no matter if your tractor is positive ground or negative ground.

Personally, I'd remove the generator--not THAT much work on an H, two mounting bolts and an adjuster bolt, plus two wires (disconnect battery cable first, before beginning removal)-- and have it checked to make sure it's charging correctly, both in volts and amps...AutoZone should be able to do that. If your generator's OK, then the problem becomes either the voltage regulator, the wiring, or the ammeter, with the ammeter being the LOWEST on the scale of probability.
