I changed the engine oil on my IH 384 tractor yesterday. After putting everything back together and cranking the motor, I discovered that it was leaking around the bottom of the oil filter canister. It is actually leaking around where the bolt screws up through the bottom of the oil filter canister. I have tightened the bolt up as tight as I can get it without possibly stripping the threads, but it is still leaking. The previous filter wasn't leaking at all and I carefully put everything back together exactly like it was before as far as i know. When I put it back together, I placed the small rubber gasket around the bolt and slid it down to the bottom of the oil filter canister. Next, I placed the spring down over the bolt and then placed the metal disc the holds the oil filter in place down over the bolt. Next comes the oil filter and then the metal disc that holds the top part of the oil filter in place. After putting all of this together, it is then screwed onto the oil filter housing on the side of the motor. After tightening the oil filter canister into the the oil filter housing and cranking the motor, there is a steady stream of oil coming out of the bottom of the oil filter canister. I took it all back off and tried to make sure that bottom rubber gasket was pressed onto the bottom of the oil filter canister and as far as I can tell, it was. I then put everything back together and discovered that it was still leaking. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I may be doing wrong or what I may have assembled backwards. Also, do you know if there is some type of a conversion made that will allow you to use a regular screw on oil filter like the ones that fit onto diesel cars or trucks. Thanks for any help in this matter.

The young person asking questions received positive feedback and advice from total strangers who "told it like it is" with the care many reserve for their own kids. The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
