Well, folks try to read all sorts of things into the designations or names of tractors, probably making a mountain out of a molehill. They probably wanted to continue the F-for Farmall, but wanted to get out of the rough horsepower numbers to avoid compasison with the F-Series, since IH really revamped the structure of its line, and the new tractors didn't really correspond to the older models (IH squeezed so much more horsepower out of the F-20 replacement that it had more horses than the F-30, for instance). A was 1-F H was 2-F, M was 3-F. There were many different designations throughout the development program, the #-F actually didn't last that long. The B was a direct offshoot of the 1-F, I don't think it was ever anything other than the two row A or the B.
