To reduce the heat in the coil you still need a ballast resistor. Some new coils have one built in, others don't. From a discount auto supply get a ballast resistor that is 1.40 to 1.65 ohms and locate it according to the schematic you are using. Get yourself an isolation diode and replace the "idiot" lamp you are using. When you get the diode properly installed the engine will stop when you turn off the switch, if the engine stills keeps running reverse the diode as you have the polarity incorrect.
