Hi Tim, Captaink may be right about the worn ring gear teeth. I would pull that starter and
hook it to battery and watch the pinion gear when you energize the solenoid to see if it is moving forward and is being retracted when you remove the voltage to the solenoid. Do not hold that voltage on the solenoid for a long period of time.
Just touch it long enough to move the pinion gear. If it is slowly being retracted I think your solenoid may be defective. Hal
