The greater the volume of fuel/air mixture being burned, the hotter the combustion (and the spark plug tip) will be. So, a plug designed to operate well at low temps can be heat damaged if operated under mostly high heat conditions and, by the same token, one designed to operate well at high load conditions can foul out if it seldom gets up to its optimum operating temperature.
