Typically, in Ohio 30W diesel oil would be good, but I suggest a 10-30 for cold winter weather. I would also suggest that you start it at least once every 6 months. First, is the oil level in the crankcase high? If it is smell the oil and if it smells like diesel fuel, then that is what you have mixed in. The diesel fuel is likely bypassing the seals between the injector pump and the gears that drive it. I’m not sure how the TD9 is designed as to if this is something that you can do yourself or not. Shop manual will help you out on that one! The leaking seal could be from the crankcase being overfull and compression blow by pressure causing it to blow out or just plain from old age and setting so long.
