After seeing the manual on my Farmall 140 specifically state not to use multi viscosity I made two observations. 1) 20w oil seemed thinner than 10w-30 at room temp (a surprise to me) 2) My engine did not have a thermostat. Therefore, the operating temps, especially in the winter will be lower than a car. A car will quickly heat up to 160 to 190 and regulate the temp. When I lashed the valves on my engine after running around the yard, I didn't come close to burning my finger tips. Perhaps the multi viscosity oils are designed to run only at these temperatures (just speculation). Because the straight 10w and 20w oil seemed thinner, I am going to run these in winter. I currently have in it 20w for 15 deg to 45 deg weather. If I wanted to run often at less than 15 degrees, then 10w will go in. It should start easier than the 10w-30 (based on feel of the cans of oil) and would get better lubrication if the engine continued to run at a low temp.
