For the cost of a head gasket, it's a pretty good idea to take the head off. A B head is one of the easiest heads to remove. Unbolt the Carb You can leave it attached to the air cleaner, but there's a good chance it will need a rebuild anyway. Unbolt the manifold. 6 nuts if I remember correctly. Take off the valve cover. Remove the head bolts. pry carefully around the perimeter in various spots til the head is loose, and then pull it straight up. It's heavy.

Take a good look at what you see. surface rust in the cylinders is OK, but pits are not. Take PB blaster, and spray the perimeter of each piston, and let sit. If you have a crank, keep working it. Another good way is to put it in 4th gear, and rock it back and forth til it comes loose. As soon as you can, get as much junk out of each bore as poissible. I always spray motor oil around each bore, and wipe it clean as the piston tops, spray new, repeat til it's clean. While you are at it, inspect the valves, and decarbon everything. It's a dirty messy job, but at least then you'll know what you have, and your chance of success goes way up. With that head off, you can clean everything up nice.
