I'll leave the charging question to them that knows - by the way - was an alternator put in with the 12V conversion? I have a single-wire 12V conversion with a Delco 10SI alternator and the charging rate positions on my switch don't have any effect (the charging rate is solely controlled by the internal regulator) but it controls the lights. The H Owner's Manual says, regarding lubrication on the Starter or "Cranking Motor": After every 300 hours of operation, put a few drops of SAE-20 oil in the cranking motor oil cup. Also put a few drops of SAE-20 oil on the bushing at the drive end whenever the motor is removed for service.
