Brian: Hydraulics are one good indicator, although there have always been rumors a few Farmall A's at end of production in 1947 had hydraulics. I have seen one such tractor, but must admit I didn't check it in enough detail to say I'm 100% sure. All letter series Farmalls regardless of size had on front of hood just above grill The word Farmall on pre Supers and the IH logo on Supers. As Jeff said serial numbers are the sure way to go. Tractor serial number should be on left seat mount, and engine serial number will be under No.1 spark plug on a flat machned surface and stanped in rather than cast in. If your tractor is A or early SA the two serial numbers should be close. On SA after 51 there became a spread as much as 2,000 in the two numbers. Another item you can look at are casting codes. Those are the series of numbers and a letter and looks like a blade type round head screw cast between digets. Day and month are by number and year by letter, X is 52, Y is 53, Z is 54, A is 55 and V was not used. Those are probably year before tractor was actually built.
