Sounds like you're a tooth off on the timing. Set #1 cyl on the compression stroke with the pointer lined up with the timing mark on the crank pully. Take the mag off, noting which way the rotor button is pointing, turn the mag opposite the direction of rotation just enough so the mag driven gear will mesh with the cam gear one tooth advanced from where it is now. Bolt things back up and do the fine setting with your timing light.
