In the control valve there is a tiny pin it will break. A lot of the time when the PTO works and the next time it don't it is caused by this pin breaking. To check it pull the plug out on the bottom of the PTO directly below the control valve. Oil will run out so you want to be fast. If the lower end of the control falls the pin is broken. And nothing falls out the little pin hasn't broken and you have other problems with the PTO.
