I may be wrong, but I think that with a mag, the impulse device retards the spark a bit because the engine cranks a bit farther than the normal spot of the points opening, to allow the impulse to wind up and let loose. Isn't there a cyntrifical advance in the distributor models that allows the timing to be retarded from the running position for starts?
