If it idles rich AND if adjusting idle mixture screw has no effect, it means either there’s a blockage in the carb idle air passage (most likely) or there’s a crack/pinhole somewhere in the carburetor (not very likely). Recommend disassembling the carburetor and carefully cleaning all the passages with a piece of wire – don’t simply just blow them with compressed air. Pay particular attention to the one or two holes in the throttle body casting that open into the air passage next in the throttle plate area – that’s where the blockage most likely is. Also give both carb castings a close inspection for hairline cracks/pin holes. When reassembling make sure there’s no passages covered by bowl gasket (i.e. wrong gasket or gasket is installed upside down). One other tip: Check the carb float and make sure it is not gas-logged. (Take the float out and shake it– if you hear anything sloshing around inside, throw it away and get a new one) Good luck!
