The timing for many of the distributor models, including my 140, is TDC when not running. The advance is centrifugal and they run at 9 to 26 degrees before top dead center (ballpark). If starting by hand was a priority, have the static timing 2 degrees AFTER DC would be a bunch more easy to start than 2 degrees BEFORE DC. However, I have seen cars with their timing off 5 and 10 degrees. Many ran just fine. Any change in point gap can affect the timing. That is why the point gap should be set first. My 140 idles well 10 degrees off the mark. Bottom line is IMHO if you really want to try hand starting, hedge your bets on the timing a little (retard it). What I use my hand crank for is to turn the engine over when I am lashing the valves.
