IH 504 starter, generator problems

I have an IH 504, gas engine. The starter motor has started to not engage, making that awful racket when hiting the ignition. How serious is this, and how do I fix it. Do I need a whole new starter, or is it just a problem with the solenoid. Where can I get the starter repaired?

Also, the generator has started making noise, and is binding sometimes. Does anyone know where I can have it reworked? Someone told me to just replace it with an alternator. Will that work OK without causing problems.
