Yes they do have a thermastat in that round oblong housing above the water pump. I would say if it was on the dyno it was super tuned so I would not think it was the timing. Is the radiator pluged yuckylooking in side? How about the fins alot of dirt and grease in them, How aboutthe fan belt good and tight. Then there is build up in the motor not alowing for good coolant flow. Check some of these things out.
PS I have never run a thermastat in my H. Took it out a long time ago. JON
