Gas vs. kerosene vs. distillate

New to tractor restoration and have just recently received both the service and parts manuals for my '51 M. The parts catalog indicates different valves for use with gas, kerosene, or distillate. My tractor is equipped to accept either gas or distillate. What is distillate? I thought that referred to kerosene, at least until I saw all three types listed. What's the advantage of kerosene or distillate vs. gas?
