Yes they will fire either way you will have to give it a good turn backwards to get a spark but you can do it by hand I do all the time I had one that did that a few weeks ago what color spark are you getting when you get your first spark? I would try cleaning all connections first the little knob on the coil clean all wire ends with something that will clean and scratch them up a little. Double check the points 13 thousands open dont sand them file or grind. Let me know JON
