Stuck steering wheel hub on M

Hi all,

I'm working on a '40 M, and I was just able to get the definitely-non-original steering wheel off. It looked like something you'd put on a 60's muscle car and it had been welded onto the shaft (!). Now that I've got it clear, I'm left with the steering shaft and what looks like a keyed hub or spacer on the end of it. The new steering wheel won't fit on the shaft without removing (or cutting down) the spacer, so I need to get it off. Is it just press fit onto the shaft? Any secrets or tricks? Thanks,
