IH wide front adjustment

Hi, we just traded a 38" planter for a 30". Sometime this winter I'll have to narrow up one of the tractors, either the 856 or the 966 haven't decided yet. Those front ends haven't been touched ever, and I'm guessing they will be a pain. Any tips on getting the axles to slide into the center tube? Any tricks to get the tie-rods slid in? Is the 56 series front end any easier to adjust than the 66.
