I have one more thought to add, which I admit is almost as probable as the Red Sox coming back from a 0-3 deficit against the Yankees in post season to tie at 3-3, but since that has happened I offer this “long shot” up for consideration. In addition to all what Allen and others have said, there is at least one other possibility if it is truly gas getting in the oil. If the shut off under the tank is not working, it is possible that the needle and seat are letting excessive fuel into the float bowl and the drain on the bottom of the carburetor is plugged allowing it to be filling so full of gas that it is leaking past the throttle shaft bushings, into the tube between the governor and the carburetor and into the pan. If this is the case, I don’t see how the engine can start, much less run ok. Something here is not quite adding up.
