Did you put in a new gasket, or is it possible that you disturbed the seal on the gasket between the plate and the block? If you did not replace the gasket(s), that is probably your problem, not a cracked cover. My guess is that the oil being slung up by the gears is being pushed through between the cover and the plate in front of the block or the block and the plate between the cover and the block.
