how do you engage the TA

ON MY 1955 300 i just got i cannot figure out how to engage the TA. next to the shifter there is a cover plate, should there be a stick there to engage the TA? It says torgue amplified on the side but boy am i stumped. i realize the only dumb questions are the ones not asked but boy do i feel ignorant. any help guys is much appreciated. Rick
