You can change the shift forks from above. Unbolt the shift fork. Put a pair of pliers (locking pref) on the shift rail and tap it toward the front (I think) far enough to slide the fork off, being careful not to lose the detent ball under the rail below the hole up throught the case. You can put the new fork on and slide the rail back into place. The tricky part is holding the ball back in it's spot while sliding the rail in over it! :)
