340 Utility T/A

Just bought a 340 U. Everything (well, except brakes and starter) seems to work pretty well, with the exception of the TA, which doesn't do anything. I've been told it could be broken (bad news) or need adjustment (good news). Can anyone suggest any troubleshooting techniques for TAs to get me started to figure out what might be the problem? I ordered a set of manuals, but they haven't arrived yet.
