Hi, if my memory is correct and this is from 35 years ago, the drive shaft for the injection pump has a key in the shaft that goes into the timing gear. So there is no way for it to be out of time by 180 degrees unless the key was not put in the shaft. There should be a couple of lines stamped in the timing gear cover by the studs that hold the injection pump on. If the previous owner had scratched a marked for the exact location of the pump before removal it could have been re-installed to the original position and the timing should have been good. If you can find the two stamped marks on the timing cover set the mark on the pump to half way between as a starting point. Are you positive you have all the air out of the injector lines ? When you loosen the lines to the injectors is this fuel squirting out every time the engine is cranked? If injector pump is timed to fast it will kick back on the starter and if it is to slow it will be hard to start and smoke a lot and will blow white smoke out the exhaust when attempting to start. Good luck JB2
