Geoff is correct, but I'll make a few more comments. Since you say you have no magneto, I assure you have a battery ignition. The wire hanging out goes to a switch in a chamber at the front of the manifold. When you switch from gas to diesel, the changeover mechanism works that switch to ground the magneto and stop the spark to the plugs. The switch would work backwards for the battery ignition, as the switch is closed, grounding the magneto when in diesel mode and open to allow spark in gas mode. Thus it won't work for the battery ignition. Some later gas start diesels had battery ignitions and I assume they had a similar switch to work with the battery ignition. Maybe you could try to locate one of those and hook it up like it is supposed to be. The battery ignition switch would require two wires, one from the battery and the other to the coil. As Geoff said, you should shut off your ignition when in diesel mode to stop sparks to the plugs. The only reason for plugging the hole would be to keep out the mud daubers and other insects. If you want to plug it, a little dab of silicone putty should do the trick.

Top that off with an old set of '36 Ford headlight shells bolted to the hood. Pretty unlikely for a car... but for a tractor, this is pretty normal. It seems that more often than not they a
