I would suggest getting an inside micrometer and checking the cylinders for wear with that. You can’t always depend on piston movement as aluminum pistons (which firecraters are) expand when they warm up. Another thing to consider is if someone overhauled it shortly before it was shut off, the ridge may have been removed at the time and the engine may not have run long enough to wear in another one. The micrometer will tell the story. I favor the complete tear down and have the block magna-fluxed, that way you will know what you have for sure when you’re done with it.
