Rod: Refering to the older tractors which did not have a zillion gears, the best economy depends a bit on what the engineer designed into the engine.. how was the cam ground? best economy often is at peak torque which is maybe 2/3 rpm in say an h or m..So if you had a light load and would have geared up and slowed RPM you maybe would have saved gas..Heavy load..no. Lugging an gegine is not good either as very slow RPM lugging increases SIDE loades on the piston etc.. Don't forget that PTO RPM either..That should be taken into consideration right away.. Generally near max RPM was a fairly good choice for tillage.. hope this makes early morning sence...harvey
