Thanks everybody so far! My family has had a variety of old junk. One side of the family used mainly Case, the other JD! The first project was a Case VAC that had been in the family since new. But when running an old JD D for the first time, I was hooked to green (and industrial yellow, i.e. "WeirdDeere") BUT, I like all the old tractors. The W30 is a neat one! I believe that the antifreeze didn't get a chance to hurt the bearings. It wasn't running more than a half hour, and didn't sit very long before the antifreeze was drained to keep it out of the engine. I will certainly check/change the oil before running it again (in spring!). Thanks for the help. I sure hope it is just a head gasket! I'm glad to hear the I+T is a reprint of the IH manual.
