Been there. Done that. I have H's but it sounds like you do not have all the shifter forks engaged or the shift mechinism is worn so that it is in two gears at the same time. The latter is easiest to fix. It can happen because the tip of the shift lever has worn and slides by the notch of one shift fork instead of moving it, or because the notches are worn and rounded. By working the shift lever around from rev to first you should be able to line it all back up. You can hear and feel it when it moves the shift fork.
If you have had the top off the tran then you could have missed one of the forks setting into the shift collar on the gears.
