Dave - From your description it sounds like there’s a couple things going on: 1 – The ammeter is connected backward since it indicates charge (deflects to the right) with the engine stopped. Correct by swapping the wires at both ammeter terminals. 2 – An ammeter indication after the engine stops says either the regulator base is not grounded, the wiring between the regulator and generator is wrong, or the regulator itself is faulty (it’s cutout relay is sticking closed). I’d reverse the ammeter connections, clean up the regulator ground and double check the wiring. Then if it still does not charge, post back and we’ll go from there...
