Yes, of course they need to be timed. How do you do it after the front cover is back on? Very carefully. In fact, I don't think you can install the distributor drive without the front cover installed. The distributor drive bolts into the front cover from behind, does it not? Find TDC on the compression stroke, set the distributor so the rotor points at the #1 cylinder's socket on the distributor cap, install the distributor, then double-check your work. You can rotate the distributor to fine-tune the timing.
