The glow plugs are operated from the key, go past on but not quite to start and they should light up. Sounds like you have a pvc type oil cap on your engine, I would just run down to napa and pick up one with the open breather in it and you should be all set, mine the key controls the glow plugs and starter, then on the left side of the dash you have your headlights and worklights. Is that what you needed?
