With the switch off, grab the crank if you have it and turn it by hand. The amount of effort it takes to turn the engine should vary as each piston comes up on compression. If you don’t feel any change in effort, you can pull it all the way across the country and it won’t start. In this case pull the valve cover as you have stuck valves. Get some PB or some kind of penetrating oil on them. Get enough rope around that will fit in the spark plug holes and still leave a foot out side the engine. Crank the engine and the rope should push the valve closed. Oil it again and rotate the engine until the valve is free. Do this until all of the valves are working If it does take more effort on each half-turn of the crank, and you can turn it over easy, pulling it won’t hurt, might not help either. I would suggest first pulling a spark plug wire and make sure you have spark that is blue and will jump about half an inch. If you do, then go ahead and pull away. If it doesn’t start, you can try squirting some gas down the air cleaner and pulling it again. Then if it starts and quits, you know that you have a fuel problem, probably plugged jets in the carburetor and you can deal with that accordingly. Good luck!
