I ran a home made one with a 560, 400, 706, and now a Oliver 1850............The Oliver works the best, then the 706, then 560. If I was you I wouldn"t waste my time buying a factory one. The ones I seen aren"t nearly heavy enough and the cylinders are too small for anything besides pine. A 3.5 or 4" dia. cylinder works pretty good, the stroke is a tad slow, but will split anything other than a chunk of 1018 steel. The one I got is only 3" and it isn"t big enough for the IH"s, but the Oliver runs it good. We had stuff my buddies store bought job(With an engine) wouldn"t even put a dent in(Serious!) and ours went right through it. I"d never buy one with an engine, most of the time you have to run them at HIGH rpms for them to do anything.............With a big tractor 3pt job the tractor is just above idle and is nice and quiet. You can also lower the splitter to the ground with the 3pt to roll on heavy pieces............Then pick it up to split them.
