Guy's, Gy's Guy's. This one has been hashed over very, very often on this list and accurate information is out there. Disc Brakes WERE NOT an option on Ms from the beginning. The Lamberts were a aftermarket option that could be installed after the fact. For instance, a farmer gets his 1939 M overhauled in 1952, he then gets those nifty disc brakes installed at the same time, plus maybe those nice larger sleeves and pistons, the dealer throws in a paint job and a fresh set of the new style decals, and his old 39 is now pretty close to a Stage I Super M for some cash, but nothing like new tractor money. It saves him from having to wait for a new tractor (war's on, you know). 52 years later, a colelctor looks at the rusty, trusty old M and think's everything's original becuase it's the same color rust and weathered evenly. Ain't so.
