I grew up with Farmalls, we always shut the gas off just like the switch, Now IH sells a needle valve with a neoprene top, one little piece of grit in the line the strainer don,t catch and it,s needle valve time again.At least with the brass ones it might flood once in awhile but not the neoprene. My kids and grandkids were taught like me Every tractor older than a 656 shut off the gas.
