I would imagine that by now the old girl has already been equipped with the 4 inch overbore kit so we can rule that out, unless it's time for a rebuild anyhow. The next thing is to make sure that everything is in good tune, plugs, points, timing, plug wires, and all that stuff, which you probably already knew. One thing that can make a big difference is the valves, if the M hasn't had the valves reground in a while, you are losing horsepower. Also, make sure the valve clearance is correct. One other thing I will mention is the governor, make sure it is operating properly and giving the full rated RPM, a sluggish governor will really hurt performance. You can even "tweak" the gov a bit to give it a few more RPMs, within reason, more speed will not hurt the engine.
